Local Authors Lary Bloom & Shelley Stoehr to Present New Works-in-Progress for Live Audience

On Tuesday, December 3rd, two New Haven area authors will read new work-in-progress for a live audience in Westville. Following each reading, event facilitator and local author Rebekah Fraser will lead a discussion with the audience. The event is part of the bi-monthly reading and talk-back series, Local Lit @ LOTTA, now in its second year.

Lary Bloom is the recipient of the Connecticut Center for the Book’s lifetime achievement award.  His most recent book is the biography, Sol LeWitt: A Life of Ideas, published this year and now in its second printing by Wesleyan University Press. In all, he is the author or coauthor of ten books, including Letters from Nuremberg, The Test of Our Times, Lary Bloom’s Connecticut Notebook, The Writer Within and The Ignorant Maestro. As a book doctor, he helped many writers publish. Bloom teaches memoir at Yale’s Writers Workshop. He is also a playwright and lyricist, plays piano acceptably and, for peace of mind in these days of political turmoil, has limited his CNN watching to 23 hours per day.  He lives in East Rock with his wife, the poet Suzanne Levine. He will read The Warehouse of Good Intentions: a memoir of war and remembrance.

Local Lit @ LOTTA welcomes Shelley Stoehr to the stage for the third time. The author of the first YA novel about self-injury, Crosses (1991), Stoehr is an MFA candidate and adjunct English instructor at Southern Connecticut State University. Her work has appeared in The North American Review, The Gordian Review, and ImageOutWrite. She received honorable mentions in the 2017 Writer’s Digest Annual Competition and in the 2019 NAM Hearst Poetry Prize and was a runner-up in WOW! Women on Writing‘s flash fiction contest (2017). She will read a short work of magical realism, titled, Wings.

Local Lit @ LOTTA will occur Tuesday, December 3rd at 7 PM on The Range at LOTTA Studio, 911 Whalley Avenue, New Haven 06515. Friendly banter, sharp stories, and plenty of refreshments are provided.  A suggested donation of $5-10 dollars helps maintain the series as a thread in the tapestry of arts events in New Haven.

Romance is in the Air (or is it?) – Announcing Our June Authors

On Tuesday, June 4th, Local Lit @ LOTTA  will feature a poignant odd couple of stories about coupling from the minds of two New Haven area writers:

MICHAIL MULVEY, an adjunct instructor of American literature, holds an MFA in creative writing and has had short stories published in literary magazines and journals in the US, the UK, and Ireland. His work has appeared in such publications as Johnny America, Scholars and Rogues, Prole, The Front Porch Review, The Summerset Review, Roadside Fiction, Literary Orphans, and War, Literature and the Arts. He will read, “Tess is her name,” which paints a portrait of an efficiency and its inhabitants.

CAROLYN LUSCH is a writer, bicyclist, urbanist, mother, and longtime Michigander who moved to New Haven two years ago. Before pursuing urban planning she wrote for The Michigan Daily and Groundcover News, and is an enthusiastic participant in local writing groups wherever she finds them. Carolyn will read “Alexandria’s Baby,” short fiction about a woman’s complicated entanglement with a famous writer.

Local Lit @ LOTTA prizes stories with fresh perspectives, bringing writers and literature fans into discourse over unpublished stories and published ones. A critique, facilitated by a member of the Editorial Board, follows each reading and helps attendees dive into deep discussions about the author’s stylistic choices  In this way, we seek to emphasize and celebrate the process of writing.
